The phrase "deep ecology" was coined by the Norwegian philosopher Arne Næss in 1973.
But I don't know who he is.
"Deep ecology is a contemporary ecological philosophy that recognizes the inherent worth of other beings aside from their utility. The philosophy emphasizes the interdependent nature of human and non-human life as well as the importance of the ecosystem and natural processes. It provides a foundation for the environmental, ecology and green movements and has fostered a new system of environmental ethics."-wikipedia

Slow business is part of the slow-life movement. Sloｗ in this context means ecologically sound or sustainable. The movement is spreading throughout Japan. Slow living stresses a healthy life-style. Slow means to connect, live in the moment, to play, to waste time. Slow business can be understood to mean alternative, ecological, local and happy.
Whereas most business pursue profit for its own sake without considering the impact on future generations, slow business cares about environmental impact, cares about stopping war. Slow business respects the environment and human lives. The emphasis is the opposite of monopoly.
Café slow in Tokyo is an example of that kind of slow business. The purpose of slow business, according to Tsuji Shinichi aka Keibo Oiwa , is to “revive our culture and create a revolution in our life style.”
Tsuji is the founder of the Sloth Movement in Japan, and the author of the Slow Life Movement bible, the 2001 book Slow is beautiful.
Explains Tsuji, “Our society and era are filled with curses of self-negation and self-hate. In protest, Slow is Beautiful is a personal incantation, a prayer, prescription, and mantra to protect ourselves from these times and liberate our lives.”
Another element of this movement is the Sloth Club, an NGO founded in July 1999. The organization’s manifesto is to live like a sloth: to live in low-energy, Earth-friendly ways. The club advocates a more thoughtful action on both a personal and social level. It supports peace, not war. It supports fair trade and local businesses.
Good-bye, corporate warriors. Good-bye, salary men and women. Hello, sloths! A sloth is slow. A sloth is beautiful. A sloth is the perfect symbol for the slow movement.
Perhaps one day, the wealth of a nation will be measured by “gross national happiness”, rather than gross national product.
